Encouraging promotion with Facebook

Twitter is a great way to drive traffic to your web presence family and plug yourself and others in short bursts of appreciation and sharing. In addition to Twitter, a Facebook fan page is an even better way to interact with your business’ audience. With 400 million active users and an average of 130 friends per user, its no secret that Facebook is the most widely utilized social media platform.

Letting your fans do your advertising

There are a myriad of ways to drum up interest with your Facebook fans: contests, surveys, polls, events, or branded landing pages offering coupons and special deals. Even if you don’t take your Facebook fan page beyond the standard “Wall”, you can generate interest by asking fans to participate in a fun way. And do your marketing for you.

Last summer, Milwaukee bar AJ Bombers (I recently wrote about their Twitter success here) promoted a contest for their fans to win free burgers for one year.

The concept was simple:

  1. Take a photo of yourself and/or friends frolicking on the bar’s giant branded beach chairs
  2. Make that photo your profile picture and keep it in place until a certain date
  3. Tag the photo with your name and AJ Bombers
  4. The most interesting profile pic would win the grand prize of free burgers for one year

After I came across this promotion, I moused on over to AJ’s Facebook fan page – but could find no photos tied to the promotion. Oops! An opportunity may have been lost to maintain ties to those participants and their ‘average of 130 friends’ who would uncover the pics in the future. Either that or the bar (or photo submitters) removed AJ’s tagged name – losing all that promotional gold. Not sure what happened there, but how cool would it be to see all those submissions – for eternity?

I hope they repeat that promotion again. They sure nailed it with the video below. What fun and quirky competition can you develop for your restaurant, bar, winery or catering biz?

    Hi again Lara,
Thanks again for the added exposure of our restaurant promotions here. Really appreciate you pointing out that the photos we’re hard to find, here’s where they are stored: http://www.facebook.com/ajbombers?ref=profile#!/ajbombers?v=photos&so=60 Looks like I could definitely make them easier to find in a folder, thanks for the tip.

Thanks for the link! I was looking for them on the fan page, rather than your friend page. Nice promotion and video! Can you reveal how many entrants you incited? Or more interestingly – how many burgers the winner devoured?!
